Kosakata Slang American English dan Contoh Kalimatnya

Bahasa Inggris memang terus berkembang setiap waktu. Selalu saja ada satu dua kata yang sengaja 'diciptakan' terutama oleh anak muda, atau yang biasa kita sebut 'slang'.

Tak jarang pelajar bahasa Inggris yang kebingungan saat berhadapan dengan native speaker. Penyebab utamanya adalah, pelajar bahasa Inggris tidak mengerti bagaimana cara native speaker berbicara 'pada kenyataannya'. Percayalah, bahasa Inggris yang kamu temui dalam 'textbook' dan bahasa Inggris 'real life' itu jauh berbeda.

Bersyukurlah, karena saya akan membagikan beberapa kosakata slang yang 'masih digunakan' sampai saat ini. Ingat, beberapa kosakata slang itu ada 'batas expired'-nya. Jangan-jangan kamu menggunakan kosakata yang sudah 'basi' atau 'ketinggalan zaman'. Maka dari itu, hati-hati dalam menggunakannya ya ;)

  1. Bail = Pergi dengan tiba-tiba. Ex. Dude, I'm gonna bail. This party sucks.
  2. Feeling blue; have the blues = Merasa depresi atau sedih Ex. I was really feeling blue when he told me he was leaving.
  3. A buck = $1 USD. Ex. I just have like two bucks and few cents.
  4. By the skin of *someone* teeth = Hampir tidak. Ex. I got through calculus class by the skin of my teeth.
  5. Creep = Orang yang aneh. Ex. He's stalking me like a creep that he is.
  6. Couch potato = Orang pemalas yang banyak melakuakan aktivitas di atas sofa dan menonton TV. Ex. I don't want to date a couch potato.
  7. Cram = Belajar mati-matian sebelum ujian (biasanya malam sebelum ujian). Ex. What is the most effective way to cram for an exam?
  8. Crash = Tidur, atau muncul (ke pesta, dll) tanpa undangan. Ex. 1) Is it okay if I crash here? 2) Those guys crashed the party at my girlfriend's house, but we let them stay.
  9. Down to earth = Rendah hati. Ex. Who doesn't like someone that down to earth?
  10. Drive up the wall = Mengesalkan seseorang. Ex. Stop whistling that tune. You're driving me up the wall
  11. For real = Ungkapan kejujuran. Ex. A: Dude, I just got a new skateboard. B: For real?! atau A: She's being so nosy! B: Ugh, for real!
  12. Going Dutch = Saat seseorang, biasanya pada waktu kencan, membayar makanannya sendiri. Ex. I was running low on money on my night out with Cindy, so we decided we're going Dutch.
  13. Beat = Sangat kelelahan. Ex. You look beat. What have you been doing?
  14. Hang out = Pergi keluar untuk menghabiskan waktu dengan seseorang. Ex. Hey, it's great to see you again. We must hang out sometimes.
  15. Chill out = Bersantai/santai. Ex. A: Hey, what did you do in the week end? B: Nothing much. Just chilled (out) atau You need to chill out and stop thinking too much.
  16. Wheels = Mobil. Ex. Nice wheels!
  17. To be amped = Sangat antusias. Ex. I'm so amped for the concert tonight!
  18. Babe = Seseorang yang menarik (cantik/tampan). Ex. Oh man, Justin Bieber is such a babe, don't you think?
  19. Busted = Menangkap seseorang sedang melakukan hal terlarang. Ex. There were two kids who were busted cheating in their exams! atau Sam got busted speeding, I'm always telling him he needs to drive slower!
  20. To have a blast = Sesuatu yang sangat hebat atau menyenangkan. Ex. Thanks for inviting me to your party last night, I had a blast.
  21. To have a crush on somebody = Menyukai seseorang. Ex. Oooh, you're so crushing on Nagase Ren right now! 
    Yeah, I have a huge crush on this guy!
  22. To dump somebody = Memutuskan hubungan (percintaan) dengan seseorang. Ex. How can I not cry? He dumped me last night!
  23. Geek = Seorang yang culun/kurang bersosialisasi. Ex. She seems like a geek, she spends all her time in the library!
  24. To be hooked on something = Ketagihan sesuatu. Ex. I'm hooked on chocolate, I just can't get enough!
  25. Looker = Orang yang cantik/tampan. Ex. The girl yonder is a real looker, don't you think?
  26. To be in = Trending saat ini (fashion, musik, dll). Ex. A: Why do you keep listening to that music? B: It's the in thing right now! atau So, what's in at the moment?
  27. To be sick = Sesuatu yang sangat bagus atau hebat. Ex. A: Have you been to Hawaii? B: Yeah, few times. It's sick!
  28. Epic fail = Kegagalan seperti bencana. Ex. A: Did you get your test mark back? B: Yeah, it was an epic fail and I have to redo the classes again next semester!
  29. To be ripped = Berotot. Ex. A: Dude, you're so ripped! What's your secret? B: Gym two hours a day!
  30. Dunno = Aku tidak tahu (singkatan I don't know). Ex. A: Where's Jane? B: Dunno.
  31. Loser = Pecundang. Ex. He's such a loser for breaking up with Calista.
  32. Rip off = Benda dijual terlalu mahal dari harga umumnya. Ex. A: Dude, you are so ripped off. This car's worth only half of that!
  33. The cold shoulder = Tidak mengacuhkan seseorang. Ex. Dude, stop giving her cold shoulder just because she dumped you.
  34. Give a ring = Menelepon seseorang. Ex. She's been sick for a couple of days, so why don't you give her a ring?
  35. Hyped = Sangat antusias. Ex. A: Dude, are you excited? B: Hell yeah, I'm hyped!
  36. Jack *something* up = Menghancurkan atau merusak. Ex. You really jack his car up
  37. Knock = Mengkritik sesuatu/seseorang. Ex. Don't knock it until you've tried it.
  38. Lighten up = Santai, tidak menanggapi sesuatu terlalu serius. Ex. Lighten up, man. That was just a joke.
  39. Pass the buck = Menyerahkan tanggung jawab pada orang lain. Ex. She's always passing the buck to her staff
  40. Piece of cake = Sangat mudah. Ex. A: How was your exam? B: Meh, it was piece of cake.
  41. Pig out = Makan/minum dengan rakus. Ex. Jodrey loved to go to McDonald and pig out until his buddies had to carry him out. 
  42. Screw up = Membuat kesalahan. Ex. I'm so sorry, Susan. I screwed up.
  43. Trash = Membuang atau merusak. Ex. He trashed his car.
  44. Uptight = Kaku, rewel --kebalikan dari 'tenang'. Ex. Don't get so uptight about everything
  45. Wrap *something* up = Meringkas. Ex. Let me wrap it up.
  46. Zonked = Sangat kelelahan. Ex. After I got home from the strip club, I zonked out on the couch.
  47. Chick = Perempuan. Ex. Did you see that chick? She waved at me.
  48. For the birds = Sesuatu jelek, sesutu yang tidak berguna. Ex. I hate homework, yo. Homework is for the birds.
  49. Jonesing = Sangat ingin. Ex. I'm jonesing for some sushi.
  50. Take a raincheck = Sesuatu yang ingin dilakukan dilain waktu. Ex. I'll take a raincheck on that drink tonight, if that's all right.
  51. Spill the beans = Tidak sengaja mengungkapkan suatu informasi/rahasia. Ex. I spilled the beans and told Jackie I loved her.
  52. Shoot the breeze = Menghabiskan waktu dengan mengobrol. Ex. I met up with that chick again last night, and we just shot the breeze for an hour.
  53. John Hancock = Tanda tangan. Ex. Could you please put your John Hancock on this form so that I can turn it in?
  54. Monday Morning Quarterback = Orang yang rewel karena menyesali keputusan/perbuatan yang telah dibuat dirinya ataupun orang lain. Ex. Frank's complaining about what should've done on his date last night like a Monday Morning Quarterback.
  55. Ride shotgun = Menaiki kendaraan umum (bus, angkot) di kursi sebelah supir. Ex. John gets sick during long trips, so he always prefers to ride shotgun.
